Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe

Basic skills

In today’s rapidly developing world, where digitisation and technology stand at the forefront of how we communicate, use services and complete everyday tasks, our ability to confidently and safely use the internet and technology is  vital to ensure our participation in our communities and our ability to find employment.

The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) invites tender submissions from experienced innovation design, digital learning and EdTech agencies to design, develop and support an online assessment tool for the ERASMUS+ Check-In-Take-Off (CITO) project. The online assessment tool will be used by members of the public to assess their literacy, numeracy and digital skills and will allow them to look at their readiness to learn and learning goals.

Educational institutions and sport and youth associations in the Reykjanes Peninsula (south-west Iceland) are key-stakeholders in the government-led action-plan aimed at strengthening the area, following the bancruptcy of the airline WOW-Air in the spring. As a follow-up of a meeting on labour and educational issues between Education Minister, Ms. Lilja Alferdsdóttir, and local inhabitants in April, a specific task force was established within the Ministry. Its role is to formulate and gain support for an action-plan, built on the vision of the local population and the government.

The European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) today launched an online library as a single-point of access to quality materials, practical tools and guidance on apprenticeships to help the EAfA members and key stakeholders in designing and delivering quality and effective apprenticeships.

Both the Department for Education and regulatory body for exams and testing, Ofqual, have launched consultations for the new digital skills qualifications. The DfE’s consultation will consider content to be included in the courses and Ofqual’s consultation will focus on effective regulation of the qualifications.

As the continuation of the Capacity Building Series, the European Basic Skills Network presents its second open education resource unit in the theme of integrating migrant adults from a linguistic perspective. The OER contains case studies from various countries (Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands) and also gives an overall view of key policy documents in the European Union.

EBSN: You are developing descriptors for basic digital skill to be included in a framework for literacy education. This is part of a project of the Council of Europe. Could you please explain to our readers what the project is about and what digital competences have to do with literacy?

The first OER unit of EBSN’s Capacity Building Series on EPALE focuses on designing integrated basic skills policies in general and specifically in connection with the Upskilling Pathways. The term integrated policy is a key aspect to any policy aiming at inclusion. For more information on what is meant by integrated policy, visit section 2.2 What do we mean by integrated policy? of the OER.

The digital world presumably presents many advantages and opportunities nonetheless, it also carriers risks and threats we were not used to. We recently delivered an E+ project where we sent both young and older learners to Portugal on a work placement programme.

As we were anticipating that this might be the first time some of our learners had lived away from home, we created a document titled "Independent Living Guide", which covered Planning for travel, work, etc, but also gave our participants tips on Health and Wellbeing and Personal Safety.

I think this could be improved and I would like to ask colleagues what they have used in the past to support their students?
