Learning participation: Improving quality, access and outreach

A clear and urgent challenge for our educational systems is to better adapt to the needs of modern societies. Today’s learners expect “complimentary chains” between formal, nonformal and informal learning, which involves better-designed innovative and collaborative learning methodologies and assessment procedures, going beyond the traditional “onesize-fits-all” approach.

These can contribute to improving learning participation1, well-being and educational attainment. Moreover, by improving resilience and outcomes, they have the potential to re-engage individuals who are at risk of failure and dropout, and therefore contribute to the objectives of the “ET2020” agenda of European cooperation in the field of education and training. That is how more inclusive and participatory approaches in the design of learning environments can contribute to modernising the way we teach and learn in all education subsystems across Europe.
