Our organization is Servei d'Educació al Llarg de la Vida of the Department of Education in Catalonia. It manages 166 adult training centres (CFA, that is, Centres de Formació d’Adults,) with 1088 teaching professionals on staff. Of these CFA, nine (9) are in penitentiary facilities. 

We also work together with other units of the Department, external to our general management, in matters of adult education. We manage and process agreements and subsidies. We also participate in and monitor groups of teachers. Our organization also manages and monitors the CFA located in penitentiary facilities, which means that we also work together with the Department of Justice of Catalonia.

People, as well as inmates, can access a variety of educational opportunities: studies for the acquisition of basic education, secondary education, and courses for access to intermediate and higher vocational training cycles, and access to university for people over 25, languages (Spanish, Catalan, English and French) and digital training.

The needs of adult education are constantly in flux, but we, in our proposal, prioritize the following needs that specially affect education in penitentiary facilities. These needs are:

1. Innovative education programs aimed at the most vulnerable population, such as young people kept in custody, in order to increase their regular attendance at educational activities, which is now only 30%.

2. The data provided by the European Organization for Prisons and Correctional Services reflects the need for an education system that includes the entire prison population in order to achieve compulsory education levels, the transition to other higher levels, the world of work, and better levels of life, health, and personal satisfaction.

3. There is room for improvement in the coordination between the agents involved in adult education. For penitentiary facilities, the coordination of the Department of Justice and the Department of Education is especially necessary.

We are looking for organizations, authorities and institutions dealing with adult education and more specifically for education of the population in penitentiary facilities. We expect and offer collaboration and exchange in the matter we described above in order to share ideas to deal with the needs, especially in those countries where the indicators are better than ours.
