European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation León-Bragança

Spain.

The European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation León-Bragança (the EGTC foreword) is an European instrument for the cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation set up to help launch projects co-financed by the European Union and actions promoted by regional or local authorities, with or without European financial participation.

The EGTC is an institutional instrument with its own legal, and has been constituted by the Provincial Government of León (Spain) and the Bragança City Council (Portugal) in order to progress in the achievement of "real cooperation experiences" between both territories.

The EGTC is unique in the sense that it enables public authorities of various Member States (in our particular case Spain and Portugal) to team up and deliver joint services, without requiring a prior international agreement to be signed and ratified by national parliaments. The law applicable for the interpretation and application of the convention is that of the Member State in which the official EGTC headquarters are located.

The EGTC has legally been constituted in 2016, as a local public entity, and it has been complemented with the two public institutions background and experience, with the aim of promoting the international cooperation to develop the territory and its society.

During this period the EGTC developed a wide local participation project having as a result the EGTC Strategic Plan. This document is a guide line for the future cooperation activities to be implemented in five big areas: Environment protection, Tourism development, Culture promotion (training and other strategies for special collectives as young and elder people), Social Services improvement and to promote their growth and true economic convergence with the most prosperous regions and now is running two more Erasmus+ projects.
