EPALE - Electronic Platform for Adult Learning in Europe

CEPA Don Juan I

Spain.

CEPA Don Juan I is an Adult Education Centre located in the World Heritage City of Alcala de Henares, 30 kilometres from Madrid. It is a public school, which has around 870 students and 20 teachers. The centre provides a wide range of educational programmes: Basic education, Spanish for foreigners, Engagement and personal development (IT and English), Mentor Classroom and an Operational Workshop for students with disabilities.

Basic education is mainly intended for students who want to get their certificates in Secondary Education, but also to those students who need basic competences in maths and literacy.

Classes in Secondary Education are also provided by distance-learning mode as well as for the Mentor Classroom. The centre provides the facilities to access to the different on-line courses, as well as to the exams.

Our school community is composed of the management team, the teachers, the students, the caretakers, the administrative and the members of the book and the painting clubs. The relationships between the members of the community are excellent, based on coexistence and the respect for each other.

The centre Don Juan I is the biggest Adult Education Centre in the area (Eastern Madrid). It is very well provided with different facilities in excellent conditions: library, laboratory, staff room, multi-purpose hall, copying-room, offices, two modern computers rooms and classrooms gifted with modern equipment such as digital boards, computers and wi-fi.

It is a reference centre that hosts students, not only from the town, but also from the surroundings. The profile of our pupils is very diversified and varied in terms of age (from 16 to over 80 years old), previous education (from non-literate adults to people engaged in permanent education), place of provenance (from North Africa or South America to Eastern Europe and Asia) and personal background. There are also a few numbers of students with special needs (mild intellectual disabilities or learning disorders). This heterogeneous background has been, in many cases, an impediment to get a school certificate through the traditional educational system (learning disorders, illiteracy, different culture, bullying, school drop-out, etc.) This is also an obstacle to get into the labour market.  Integration, inclusion and active citizenship through education is a major objective in our school. Learning new tools and sharing experiences is critical to achieve our students’ success, not only in the academic field but in the social area too. Promote the sense of commitment and responsibility among our students, as well as develop democratic values becomes essential to fulfill our goal.

Currently, we are involved in two Erasmus+ projects whose aims are to develop the European dimension in adult education and to promote the European cultural heritage.
