Module 5: Resource Mobilization
Session 1: Navigating the road to financing
About the Session
In the first session of our fifth module, Jennifer Louie, Managing Director at Closed Loop Partners in New York, dived into an overview of different financial tools available to those that want to start their own community endeavors. Jennifer, a finance professional with twenty years of experience in the industry and a background in asset management, corporate finance, and business conversed with the participants in an interactive presentation in which Q&A breaks were encouraged.
Jennifer and the participants primarily discussed in detail the intricacies of grant funding, crowdfunding, private funding, and impact investing, with a focus on the role of storytelling, personal networks, and scalability in securing funding. Helping them develop an understanding of what sources of capital are available, how to leverage or access that capital, and how pitching a project in a manner that spotlights financial merit, and positive social and environmental impact are all components of building a successful project.
Lastly, they discussed the challenges of fundraising for non-technological projects and the use of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) in the process.
