Adult Fashion technical production skills

by Olusola McKenzie

I was interested to explore the challenges language will pose when teaching adults technical fashion production skills in my recent project titled "Fashion ABC".

The project's main theme was focused on equipping VET learners studying Fashion with skills to improve their work experience. However, we were able to develop staff skills through a combination of job shadowing, training staff engaging in the delivery of training etc.

This gave us an opportunity to teach older learners including some who were project partners staff new skills.

Learning Points

1. The perceived challenges with language did not prevent our learners from achieving their learning outcomes though we sometimes had an interpreter (another learner).

2. Visual tools and techniques were very useful in communicating which enabled learners to follow the lesson.

3. Preparation for different learning styles helped to deliver a good session.

4. Do not assume learners are competent even when they repeatedly inform you of their past achievements. Continous assessment and guidance will ensure that you support your learners to achieve the learning outcome.

Do others have any learning points from delivering to adults? Could be in your own country or abroad.
