Worldwide School Psychological Support (WSPS) in the Post-Covid Era!

The project "The Worldwide School Psychological Support in the Post-Covid Era - WSPS" is relevant given the health context, particularly the psychological impact on students of school closures due to the pandemic. Its goal is to promote the dissemination of psychology within educational systems, particularly within schools for students and teachers. Through the development of school psychology, the partners aimed to benefit the psychological health of students and teachers.

The WSPS consortium representing 8 countries (FR, IT, RO, RU, MT, GR, CY, TK) was supported by a significant diversity of organizations: four associations; two schools; one medical practice; and one local authority. The last two years' work has resulted in the development of the following intellectual outputs (IO):

  • Competency model for school psychologists describing the competencies, roles, and responsibilities of school psychologists in the EU. The partners conducted a needs analysis concerning the professional role of school psychologists in the participating countries through field research and an online survey of 279 representatives from the school educational system (teachers, principals, policy-makers, school psychologists) from 80 institutions. A documentary research also made it possible to draw up a detailed inventory of the laws regulating psychologists' access to schools, the adaptation of school psychological support during the Covid-19 period, the economic conditions of psychologists working with schools, the activities commonly carried out by psychologists in school environments, the strengths and weaknesses perceived for the role of school psychologists, etc. These initial results formed the basis for the definition of a competency model drafted in accordance with the ECVET terminology and the EQF qualification.
  • Establishment of an online network of school psychologists: this is an online platform including training dedicated to psychologists wishing to work in the school educational system, according to the WSPS competency model. The training program is designed for the EQF 5 qualification level and is structured into 8 modules:
    • Online psychological consultation
    • Psychological consultation for teachers
    • Psychological consultation for students
    • Psychological consultation for families
    • Psychology in the multicultural environment
    • The psychologist as a counselor for human development
    • How to measure the impact of psychological actions and exploit the WSPS competency model
    • Psychology to improve students' academic performance

Each training module includes a 45 minute video lecture and an evaluation test. The video lecture script is available for free download. The platform also offers other functionalities, such as:

  • A forum to facilitate discussion on how to improve policies related to school psychology, connect teachers, students, principals, and school psychologists throughout Europe, and promote the dissemination of best practices.
  • A resource center where numerous case studies or research articles are identified to complement knowledge about the role and competencies of school psychologists and serve as inspiration for the development of school psychologist projects for schools.
  • A contact space that allows each consortium member to connect school psychologists who have completed the WSPS program with schools to organize online psychological consultations, particularly during Covid restrictions and other emergency situations.

The platform has been tested by over 545 school psychologists, teachers, and learners. It is available for free access in all consortium languages at https://wsps-project.eu/.

  • Policy recommendations to promote regulation and inclusion of school psychologists at the European level as well as the recognition of activities, responsibilities, and functionalities. The recommendations defined by the consortium were presented and evaluated in terms of effectiveness, usefulness, and feasibility by 605 experts (lawyers, policy-makers, psychologists, school principals, and teachers).

A transnational dissemination event was organized by the Ministry of Gozo, Malta https://www.igorvitale.org/congresso-europeo-di-psicologia-scolastica/, allowing for multiplier effects outside of participating organizations at the local/regional/national/European level.
