Un-proof higher education

WHY

Why does the Netherlands have the treaty?

The UN treaty concerning the rights of individuals with a disability (hereinafter called 'the treaty'), which took effect in the Netherlands on 14 July 2016, is designed to improved the position of people with a disability. The treaty assumes inclusion in order to give everyone equal opportunities, including in education.

WHO

Who plays a key role?
  • People with a disability: ‘Nothing about us, without us’: people with a disability contribute to the decision-making process for creating policy, legislation and implementation.
  • The government: the government makes laws, implements policy and ensures that others likewise comply with the obligations of the treaty.
  • The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights: The Institute monitors the treaty in the Netherlands and investigates individual complaints about admission and adaptations.

WHAT

What does this mean for students with a disability?

The content of the treaty (article 24) applies to all education institutes. They are required to actively promote the inclusion of students with a disability. This means that they must make adaptations and ensure general accessibility to buildings and information systems.

UN-PROOF HIGHER EDUCATION

As a student, what can you do?

Help make education more inclusive in five ways.

  1. Talk about yourself
Share your personal experiences about studying with a disability with fellow students. What obstacles have you encountered? How did you respond?

Curious about others' experiences? Watch the videos on the handicap + studie YouTube channel.

  2. Share your experience
Let your voice be heard together with fellow students. What possibilities do you see in your degree programme to make education more accessible to students with a disability?

  3. Make yourself visible
Engage the Board of your university of applied sciences or university in conversation with about possible improvements. You can do so through the representative advisory council, for example.

Curious whether your university of applied sciences or research university's policy is up to scratch?  Suggest carrying out the policy scan! Go to www.handicap-studie.nl > downloads > HS_Beleidsscan.pdf

  4. Give your opinion
Seize the opportunities to provide your (un)solicited opinion, for example in the National Student Survey. You will help make a contribution to monitoring education this way.

Want to find out what students with a disability think about your institute? Visit www.studiekeuze123.nl

  5. Let your voice be heard
Participate in activities, for example the student union, which contributes to national policy and (international) legislation on studying with a disability.
