TRADITIONAL GÜMÜŞHANE RUGS
Gümüşhane Public Education Center Rug Weaving Workshop was established in June 2016.From that day to this 3 courses succesfully completed and 36 course attandees produced several genuine rugs.İn the frame of the first course which was opened with collaboration of Labour Office (İŞKUR) attandees was paid daily wage. Traditional Rug Weaving courses are held 792 hours each.
Tradition rug weaving has an important place among our region’s handicrafts .The bendings of rugs are goat hair ,knitting is from wool (worst colored by natural madder).they are generally weaved in sizes 1.5 x 3 m and 3 x4 metres in several model and desings in timber frames.
Carpetbags ,saddles,hall rugs,wall ornaments,amulets,nametags ,prayer rugs can also be produced in weaving benches and dark colours are mostly preferred.Ground colours are mainly red,claret red,black,green,yellow and ultramarine and pastel colours are used arbitrarily.Chemical coloring is never used and the threads are fleece wool which are hand spin.
The ornaments are created by slipping on and under the warps till the edges of another pattern and reversing the pattern colour threads. In this way same colored wraps creates the patterns by shuttling between it’s own designs.
Traditional patterns peculiar to rugs are ; mirrored wings,perms,props,curved chains,rake teeth,bead eye,small wings,twists,rabbit footplate,ramhorn and frogchain.
While the colors of rugs differ from region to region ,green ,orange ,blue,ultramarine and red are used widely. Rugs ,apart from beind used as ground cloths at homes,saddlebags to carry goods,sacks to keeps corps and clothes ,they are also used at tent making and furniture surface covering in these days.
