STEMSiL – A new European project and partnership to promote STEM in deaf education!

The new KA2 Erasmus+ project "STEMSiL: STEM methodologies in Sign Languages" (2022-1-DE-03-KA2020-SCH-000087039) started on December 31, 2022. The main objective of this project is to create innovative sign language methodologies in STEM Deaf Education with special focus of primary and secondary school levels.

The consortium is composed of university, associations and schools with a strong expertise in the field of sign languages, education:

  • Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany),

  • CEIPES (Italy)

  • The Center of Greek Sign Language (Greece),

  • STIMMULI FOR SOCIAL CHANGE (Greece),

  • Colegio Gaudem (Spain),

  • APES31 (France),

  • Agrupamento de Escolas Quinta de Marrocos (Portugal),

The consortium members met in Lisbon, Portugal on 19 and 20 January 2023 for the first time. The event was hosted by the Agrupamento de Escolas Quinta de Marrocos.

One of reasons of the project is the lack of accessible educational tools in the context of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in Deaf Education in Europe. This constitutes a challenge to the development of the knowledge skills and action competencies through sign languages promoted by these STEM disciplines.

Through what will the consortium work to meet this need and the project’s objectives?

  • Research on the current state of STEM in Deaf education
  • Development of an online platform and a lexicon in selected European sign languages
  • Co-creation of STEM labs which foster the collaboration between deaf students and teachers/sign language interpreters.

In addition, teachers and sign language interpreters from all the partners countries will participate in a training in Madrid, Spain which will be hosted by Colegio Gaudem in 2024. Participants will have an opportunity to review innovative methodologies in STEM Deaf Education.

During the meeting in Lisbon, partners discussed about all these various aspects of the project and its implementation as well as dissemination and quality management.

The project social media channels and web site will be created in February 2023.
