REMINISCENCE AND PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS LIVING WITH DEMENTIA AT MUSEUMS

Denmark, Aarhus
Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 11:30 CEST to Tuesday, April 25, 2017 - 17:00 CEST

Open-air museums function as great environments with their ability to present complete
settings of the past and involving all of our senses, which creates good conditions for lifelong
learning. Five open-air museums in Europe all work with reminiscence, based on cultural
heritage – objects, photos, buildings, smell, taste and meaningful activities such as knitting,
baking, music and gardening. By connecting to the participants’ backgrounds by using objects
from the region where they grew up, or objects they remember from their youth, there is a
personal connection for the participants.

Since 2014, the five museums and three universities have been a part of the Erasmus+ program
‘Active Ageing and Heritage in Adult Learning’ (abbreviated AHA). The AHA project has evaluated
the effects of heritage reminiscence activities at the involved museums and developed
them further. The result will be presented together with best practice to inspire and help other
museums that wish to work with these methods. The project has also produced courses for
carers and relatives.

During the seminar in Den Gamle By, the project’s partners will present the results from the
Erasmus+ project. The seminar is aimed at people who work with elderly people suffering from
dementia within museums, the nursing sector or academic research.
