Online assessment – preparing and supporting teachers
The online course of the Erasmus+ project "Empower teachers for remote online assessments in higher education (Remote.EDU)" offers teachers support in developing online assessment scenarios.
Teachers as learners: An online course on professionalisation in online assessment
The aim of the online course of the Erasmus+ funded project Remote.EDU is to sensitise teachers to the possibilities of online assessment scenarios, to propose concrete scenarios to them and to empower them to implement these scenarios in their courses. Between 2022 and 2023, four universities from Spain, Belgium, Turkey and Germany developed an international, freely accessible online course in which teachers are introduced in a self-directed way to basic questions and the practice of online assessment in the university context. This introduction is also relevant and usable for other educational sectors, including adult education. The exchange in the community is explicitly provided for, as is the decision-making and implementation of online assessment scenarios in one's own course (more information at the end of the entry).

Background: Digital Transformation in education
In the context of the digital transformation, all areas of education are concerned with supplementing courses for their target group with digital media and formats and, in some cases, designing them anew. The Covid-19 pandemic has provided an additional impetus in this regard in recent years and has above all promoted the pedagogical design of courses, lessons and teaching. However, this period clearly shows that special challenges arose for the area of assessment:
- How can online assessment be implemented in a way that pedagogical goals are redeemed?
- How can the technical infrastructure be used in a stable and legally secure way?
- How can we prepare learners and teachers for the scenarios of online assessment, which are not yet mainstream?
While pedagogical and technical practices have been developed in educational institutions and the legal situation was ad hoc adapted, there is still a need to train teachers in this area. This is due to the fact that assessment is a central part of the course design and is ideally closely related to the content-related learning objectives and methods used in the course.
Digitisation offers a multitude of possibilities to positively contribute to assessment practices. Teachers are therefore called upon to familiarise themselves with the possibilities and limits of digitisation for assessment, based on insights into assessment pedagogy.
