Migration and Integration Conference
Malta, Valletta
Thursday, April 28, 2016 - 09:00 CEST
Migration and Integration are very topical right now, and as can be expected, bring about an array of opinions and emotions in any discussion. Some are able to take a very clear stand on eith of two sides of the issue whereas others can be somewhat unsure of what to think and feel about it. This conference promises to bring a few objective ideas, and first-hand experiences from several people who are directly involved.
Speakers include:
Dr Helena Dalli - Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties. As Minister, Dr Dalli has overseen some of the most groundbreaking laws in civil rights in recent times, including Civil Unions and the more recent Gender Identity, Gender Expression And Sex... Characteristics Act. Dr Dalli is a lecturer in Economic and Political Sociology, Public Policy, and Sociology of Law at the University of Malta.
Dr. Neil Falzon - Director, Aditus Foundation. Dr. Falzon headed Amnesty International’s Malta branch before completing his Mediterranean Masters in Human Rights and Democratisation, writing his dissertation on the positive duty of states to prevent human rights violations. Neil was engaged by the UNHCR to act as Liaison Officer between its Rome office and Malta. At this time, Malta was experiencing the arrival by boat of hundreds of refugees leaving Libya in an attempt to seek refuge in Europe. He established, and continues to lecture, International Human Rights Law within the Faculty of Laws, and lectured other topics such as European Union Migration Law and Policy, Mediterranean Migration, Human Rights for Social Workers (on-going) and Regional Systems and Instruments of Human Rights Protection (also on-going).
In 2011 aditus foundation was born as a generic advocacy-based NGO. He is one of the Malta Coordinators of the European Legal Network on Asylum (ELENA), and member of the Academic network for legal studies on immigration & asylum in Europe (Odysseus Network)
Daniel Trilling - Editor, New Humanist. Daniel Trilling is a British journalist, editor and author. He is the editor of New Humanist magazine, a role he started in September 2013.
