Migrants learning new skills in the Reception Centre in Sombor

Language: EN

After the construction of outdoor sports facilities, the Reception Center for migrants in the settlement of Šikara, on the outskirts of Sombor, offers several new programmes. A sewing workshop has been opened, and a mini hairdresser is in operation, while a large indoor children's corner with a computer section for parents is in preparation. As stated by the authorities in the Primary Center, the goal is to enable people in this institution to have a better quality of life.

There are currently 99 people in the Reception Center of Šikara, or twenty families with 53 children, mostly from Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. Serbia is still a country of transit and while waiting here for legal permission to enter Hungary, and then proceed, we are doing everything to enable migrants to have a quality extended stay with the help of the EU - says Aleksandra Dimić from the Refugees and Migrants Commissariat, the head of the Center.

Thirty migrant children from this Reception Center are included in the elementary school system of Serbia, another four children attend the kindergarten in Šikara, and one girl with special needs is taken daily by the Center staff to the school "Vuk Karadžić".

Apart from that, the Red Cross of Sombor also participates in the activities of the Reception Center. One of the actions is a workshop on the prevention of human trafficking. Residents of the Center, Said and Gane, are trained to transfer knowledge to new users in their language, and they will, as they say, do it while staying in Sombor.
