Integration of Refugee Children Towards Sociocultural Harmony

The civic association Spoluprácou pre lepšiu budúcnosť - Veľký Meder (Slovakia) in the period from 2022 to 2024, implemented the project "Integration of Refugee Children Towards Sociocultural Harmony" within the framework of the ERASMUS+ Programme. This initiative was carried out in collaboration with a Turkish coordinator and partner institutions from Slovenia, Germany, and Türkiye.

Key Focus Areas of the INTREF Project

The INTREF Project primarily aimed at:

  • Analysing the needs and requirements related to the social adaptation of refugee children in primary schools.

  • Enhancing the competences of teachers working with refugee children through a specialized training program.

  • Developing innovative educational programs and motivational videos to support refugee children in their learning process.

  • Facilitating the exchange of experiences and best practices among partner countries, particularly in providing support to parents and refugees children.

The INTREF Workshop in Slovakia

One of the most significant activities of the project was the INTREF workshop in Slovakia, which highlighted the importance of supporting the teaching and adaptation process of refugee children and their social inclusion in the host country.

The main objective of the workshop was to present the project, its activities, and outcomes, which will be freely available online in five different language versions (English, Turkish, German, Slovak, and Slovenian):

  • Training Modules for Primary School Teachers

  • Educational Program for Refugee Children

  • Educational and Inspirational Videos

Participants were informed about how the project results could be integrated into everyday practice and how the Training Modules for Teachers, the Educational Program for Refugees Children, and the Educational and Inspirational Videos could be incorporated into existing educational activities.

Additionally, the results of a survey on the integration process of refugee children in primary schools were presented, with a specific focus on Slovakia. The research examined the situation in key areas such as cooperation, communication, creativity, and problem-solving between teachers, refugee children, and their parents during the adaptation process.

As part of the workshop, the "Electronic Collection of Best Practices" was introduced. This resource includes practical examples aimed at: motivating and improving services for teachers

and enhancing social inclusion and integration of refugee children in the host country. The workshop also emphasized the most essential skills of teachers in the 21st century to effectively support refugee children.

Participants highly appreciated the project's results and expressed strong interest in using them in the future. They also emphasized the importance of discussion and information exchange on support services for teachers and refugee children, enabling collaboration among experts from different fields.

The INTREF project No. 2022-1-TR01-KA220-SCH-000087388 was co-funded by the ERASMUS+ Programme.
