Essentials of Adult Learning

Remote Event
Thursday, October 2, 2014 - 10:00 CEST to Thursday, October 16, 2014 - 18:00 CEST

Today’s learners and workplace learning environment are vastly different than they were in the last century, when Adult Learning Theory became a science unto itself. How do we accommodate the adult learner’s need to work collaboratively when we have globally dispersed workforces? How do we allow for observation and reflection when our training time is cut from four-hours to two-hours? How do we teach critical thinking skills to learners who are used to getting their information in 140 characters?

Aims and objectives
This program will explain the principles of adult learning in the context of workplace implementation, providing tips for design as well as facilitation. In addition to “classic” theorists like Malcolm Knowles, you’ll discover new approaches to adult learning, capitalizing on new brain research and informal learning processes.
Expected (learning) outcomes
By the end of this program, you will be able to: understand the design and facilitation principles that appeal to the way adults take in and process information; apply the principles of adult learning to both groups and individuals; describe the four typical workplace learning outcomes and identify which ones you need your learners to achieve; look beyond traditional training methods to capitalize on the variety of learning mediums available today (web-based platforms, informal learning, etc.); motivate the adult learner and connect training to on-the-job performance.
Recognition / certification of participation
Students who successfully complete the class will receive a Statement of Accomplishment signed by the instructors. The Statement of Accomplishment is not part of a formal qualification from the University. However, it may be useful to demonstrate prior learning and interest in your subject to a higher education institution or potential employer.
