EPALE NSS Malta Webinar 5: CRPD Disability Etiquette and Access to Education

EPALE NSS Malta is honoured to host The Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) for the 5th in a series of 6 webinars held in 2023.
The Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability
CRPD is committed to rendering Maltese society an inclusive one, in a way that persons with disability reach their full potential in all aspects of life, enjoying a high quality of life thanks to equal opportunities.
In fulfilling this mission, CRPD works in order to eliminate any form of direct or indirect social discrimination against persons with disability and their families, while providing them with the necessary assistance and support.
CRPD's Strategy
CRPD’s first ever strategy identifies five strategic priorities which reflect the main areas which CRPD will be focusing on from the year 2022 to 2024.
These are:
- Priority One – Protecting, promoting, and monitoring the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
- Priority Two – Raising awareness on disability rights and obligations.
- Priority Three – Grassroots empowerment and strengthening the voice of persons with disability.
- Priority Four – Community-based independent living and deinstitutionalisation.
- Priority Five – Capacity building.
Disability Etiquette and Access to Education
In this webinar, CRPD Chief Executive Ms. Rhoda Garland, will commence by addressing the basis of the legal right of disabled people to access education. Historically disabled people have received a lower level of education whilst at school; as access to employment for disabled people has improved, this has led to more disabled adults seeking to improve their educational attainment in adult education settings in order to be able to find employment. The webinar will look at the issues which disabled people with a wide range of impairments encounter and the way that educators can make their courses more inclusive for disabled people to access. It will look at the adaptations which can be provided to disabled people which will enable them to take part in mainstream adult education courses and will end with a discussion revolving around different impairments and ways to accommodate adult learners with impairments.
Session Topics:
- The Equal Opportunities Act and UNCRPD Act
- The etiquette relating to disabled people with diverse impairments
- A video showing attitudes towards disabled people
- Issues relating to access to information
- Accessible solutions
A group discussion of key issues relating to the education of adults with impairments will wrap up the 1-hour session.
