EDPEP Consortium: education in prison
Newsletter nr. 1 – January 2024
EDPEP: There has to be another way, and there is another way.
EDPEP stands for European Dissemination Platform for Education in prison (EDPEP).
On the initiative of the Dutch branch of the European Prison Education Association (EPEA-NL), EDPEP will be developed with partners from Norway, Poland, Portugal and Rumania from October 2023 till November 2025 . EDPEP is an Erasmus+ programma KA2 Small Scale Partnership Projects Adult Education.
Persons and organizations working in European countries have much knowledge, expertise and experience in education in detention. However, it remains within their own organisation and is hardly shared with others in their own country and abroad. As a result, this wealth of information remains unshared, unassessed and unused by third parties.
EDPEP is a system to keep this knowledge available, up-to-date and active in a growing network in Europe. The Motor of EDPEP is running by three active steps interacting with- and linked to each-other. Key-figures in North Europe, West Europe, East Europe, South Europe and Central Europe, moderate and up-date these three steps and invite their network to join the three step community and share information about their projects, conferences, presentations and websites like for instance EPEA.org.
The three steps:
- THE Prison Education Wiki http://www.prison-education-wiki.eu/ is a searchable database of projects publications, tools and resources that captures all fields related to education in prison. It is relevant for educators, facilitators, stakeholders and managers involved in prison education as well as inmates and ex-offenders. Each whole resource has been tagged with multiple hashtags, reflecting themes and key issues in formal and non-formal learning.
- EPALE: https://epale.ec.europa.eu/ EPALE is a European, multilingual, open membership community of adult learning professionals, including adult educators and trainers, guidance and support staff, researchers and academics, and policymakers. EPALE is funded by the Erasmus+ program. EPALE enables us to start our own EDPEP community with colleagues across Europe and start discussions, share knowledge and link to the database and to the EDPEP LinkedIn page.
- THE EDPEP LINKEDIN CONSORTIUM: https://www.linkedin.com/in/edpep-consortium-9b6b872a3/ invites people to connect to our page. The page is a constant link to share newsletters, to share new projects on the wiki, to share new discussions and information on EPALE. 2023
During the Kick-off meeting on 27 October 2023, the partners participating in the project made agreements about the content, products and working method and planning within the project.
In the period up to 01 April 2024, the members of EPEA-NL will develop a Prison Education WIKI for use within the European Union. This is done on the basis of a prototype developed and successfully tested by EPEA-NL in recent years.
The aim is to recruit contact persons in each of the countries by the partners of the 5 above-mentioned regions in Europe who can post information about the knowledge, expertise and experience in education in detention in their own country in the WIKI and make it available to colleagues from the WIKI.
In the period April to June 2024, the EPEA-NL trainer involved in EDPEP in each of the regions will train the regional trainers via train-the-trainer in the use of the WIKI and user manual.
From 1 July 2024 to 31 December 2024, the regional trainers will train the contact persons in all countries. In the period after that, the WIKI with manual will be implemented Europe-wide.
