EAEA Grundtvig Award 2020

Every year, EAEA looks to adult education projects from Europe and further for their demonstrations of innovation and excellence. The EAEA Grundtvig Award highlights project results that produce new ideas, new partnerships, new methodologies and a new understanding of how we can work in adult education. This year’s theme is access and outreach.

Improving wellbeing, wages, self-confidence and social inclusion, adult education can help to promote equality in European society.However, those least likely to access adult education are often the ones that need it most. For many low-skilled adults, education is shrouded by stigma and discomfort. Reaching out to them is key to make learners’ groups more diverse and inclusive. Low-threshold access programmes can help not only in developing the confidence of these adults, but also in providing them with skills or qualifications to develop their employability and careers.

This requires learning providers to be flexible and prepared to tailor education offers to the needs of a large diversity of potential target groups, including, in particular, learners from disadvantaged groups of society, such as disabled learners and learners with low levels of formal education. It also means accounting for changes in learning programmes to make learning more inclusive for all backgrounds, and cultural or religious beliefs. This diversity in adult education is, at the same time, one of the greatest strengths of the sector, as it provides a space and opportunity for inter-cultural dialogue, encouraging integration and inclusion and helping to break down barriers in areas with strong cultural divides or tensions. Good practices from all over Europe show how adult education organisations and providers are making sure that every adult has the opportunity to learn.

Main aims: 

  • To increase participation in adult learning by developing effective strategies for outreach;
  • To raise awareness, at a European level, of successful projects relating to access and outreach for adult learning;
  • To raise awareness of the importance of access and outreach in adult education;
  • To raise awareness of the importance of learner-centred approaches in adult education;
  • To inspire new projects relating to access and outreach in and with adult education.

Why participate? 

All participants gain: 

  • The certificate of attendance;
  • Appearance in the EAEA Grundtvig Award publication that will be distributed in EAEA’s events and networks;
  • International visibility in EAEA’s social media channels and EAEA website.

The winners gain: 

  • Recognition and honour;
  • The certificate of attendance; 
  • A concrete EAEA Grundtvig award (a piece of art or handicraft…);
  • An invitation to one personal of the winning organisations to the EAEA General Assembly 2020 in Bratislava (8/9th June 2020) and the EAEA Grundtvig Award Ceremony including travel and accommodation;
  • Key slot in the EAEA Grundtvig Award publication that will be distributed in EAEA’s events and networks;
  • International visibility of the project in EAEA’s social media channels and EAEA website also after the ceremony;
  • Appearance in EAEA’s press-release after the competition.

How to participate? 

Categories: 

We will award excellent adult education and learning programmes that have successfully developed interesting or innovative strategies of outreach and improving accessibility.

Due to the nature of this year’s theme our categories this year will be focused on programmes as opposed to transnational projects. By programmes we mean longer-term initiatives as opposed to shorter-term projects. You may apply under either of the categories below. Programmes can be from EU and non-EU countries (from the Council of Europe). 

  1. Local and regional
  • Programmes with a small geographical scope that have successfully developed interesting, innovative and/or effective means of learner outreach and/or improving accessibility of provision
  1. National (and transnational)
  • Programmes that have successfully developed interesting, innovative and/or effective means of learner outreach and/or improving accessibility of provision 
  • Innovative partnerships developed in order to improve outreach and/or accessibility in adult education

Eligibility:

Programmes can but need not be supported by the European Commission. They can but need not be Grundtvig projects. They can, but need not be Erasmus+ projects. 

The programme or initiative should be up and running for at least 3 months. It must have evidence of outputs such as a report, website, or any other form of verification.

The initiatives/ programmes can cover any relevant topic in adult education.

Criteria

The applications will be checked against the following criteria: 

Outstanding creativity and innovation of the idea, or innovative means of delivery.

The programme and its outcomes being transferable for other regions will be seen as a bonus.

Plans and capacity to upscale (where relevant) will be seen as a bonus.

Excellence of programme presentation in terms of writing, summarising and supporting with pictures.

Effectiveness of the programme (how the outcomes have been reached, or show promise of being reached). 

The programme must clearly demonstrate how it aims at making a positive difference to, or impact on learners’ lives and the lives of their families, friends, colleagues and/or the community and will improve the outreach of adult education opportunities in their area.

The presentation of testimonials from learners or trainers will be seen as a bonus. 

Focusing on one specific target group will be seen as a bonus, irrespective of the nature of said group.

  • Plans to continue, upscale, or improve the programme in the future

You may submit a description of your programme in one of the following languages: English, German, French. Entries must be received by filling in an application form for the Grundtvig Award up until 10 April 2020. It is possible to send attachments (maximum file size 20 M) with the form, or you can send attachments by email. If you have any printed or similar evidence, please sent it to:
