Creating the "Sustain4Seniors in Cultural Heritage Sites Roadmap" Brochure: A Guide for Cultural Heritage Sites
The Sustain4Seniors HUB project successfully wrapped up. Partners from Šibenik (Croatia), Râșnov (Romania), and Kaunas (Lithuania) began the project with shared goals: to involve seniors in sustainable programs and make cultural heritage more accessible. Each partner faced unique local challenges, adapting their approaches to fit the specific needs of their communities. The brochure reflects both these differences and the strategies that proved successful.
The cultural managers from the project partners Fortress of Culture Šibenik (Croatia), Mioritics Association (Romania), and Kaunas Fortress Park (Lithuania) who participated learned more about sustainable and inclusive practices and applied them in their local communities. The knowledge and experiences gained during the project have been collected in a online brochure: Sustain4Seniors Hub in Cultural Heritage Sites ROADMAP. The brochure is now available to the public and aims to inspire and guide other cultural heritage sites.

About the Project
The Sustainable fortifications for seniors learning hub project was funded by the Erasmus+ program and lasted 11 months, with a budget of 60,000 euros. The project aimed to improve skills, share good practices, and develop new ideas among cultural heritage managers. The focus was on creating sustainable, socially inclusive, and environmentally friendly management of fortified sites, especially programs that increase the participation of seniors in cultural activities.
Their efforts culminated in activities such as workshops, local events, and surveys that engaged senior citizens and promoted sustainability.
Key Achievements
Each partner held a final event to share results and introduce new programs developed during the project:
- Šibenik, Croatia: The Silver Programme line was created with seniors and for seniors to reflect their interests and needs. It offers free access to cultural events and it’s based on sustainability principles. The program also fosters intergenerational connection, encouraging shared experiences between age groups.
- Râșnov, Romania: The Seniors with Passions program celebrated senior citizens’ contributions, encouraging community involvement through workshops and storytelling.
- Kaunas, Lithuania: The Fortress for Silver Members initiative provided seniors with discounted tours and events focused on sustainable living.
Additionally, cooperation agreements with local senior associations were signed to ensure that the programs continue beyond the project’s conclusion.
The Value of International Collaboration
This project highlighted the importance of international cooperation. By sharing ideas and working together, partners learned from each other’s successes and challenges, creating more effective programs. Sustainability was a central theme throughout, not just in environmental terms but also in ensuring that the newly developed activities will continue to benefit seniors and their communities in the future. The Sustain4Seniors in Cultural Heritage Sites Roadmap brochure offers practical steps and inspiration for other heritage sites looking to implement similar initiatives, ensuring that cultural heritage remains accessible and relevant for all generations.
