When refugees arrive in a country, it is important to start the process of orientation towards the labour market in the new country as early as possible. Therefore, career guidance has been piloted in Norway since 2016 for refugees in asylum reception centres. The piloting continues in 2019, extended to including career guidance for resettlement refugees (quota refugees) and persons who have arrived in Norway because of family reunification. These persons are settled directly in municipalities when they arrive in Norway.
The career guidance in asylum reception centres was evaluated in 2017. The evaluation concluded that the career guidance is useful and motivating for the participants. The recommendations were among others:
- To have the best effect, career guidance should start as early as possibly when the refugees have arrived in Norway.
- The participants must get an understanding of what career guidance is and why they are participating.
- The very first information om career guidance should be written in the participants’ mother tongue.
- The guidance should be anchored in a cooperation with local authorities.
