International Day of Older Persons and Community Cooking: Strengthening Intergenerational Connections
The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated every year on October 1st, initiated by the UN to highlight the importance of respecting and appreciating the role of the elderly in society. On this day, various events around the world draw attention to the challenges faced by older people and the importance of improving their quality of life. This year, we celebrated the occasion with a special event: a community cooking session involving both schoolchildren and older adults.
The goal of the event was to strengthen the connection between generations, where older participants shared their traditional family recipes with the younger ones. Together, they prepared meals while engaging in meaningful conversations about past traditions and modern cooking techniques. The event not only promoted intergenerational collaboration but also created memorable shared experiences.A key player in this initiative was M-Around Kft., serving as the coordinator of the BRIDGE project. Supported by the Erasmus+ program, the project's aim is to build bridges between different generations, cultures, and social groups. A particular focus is on enhancing the digital skills of older adults and promoting cooperation between generations through various initiatives. The cooking event, held on October 17, 2024, in Maroslele, was part of this project. In addition to fostering interaction between the elderly and young people, the event emphasized the importance of community engagement and collaboration. The project, supported by the European Union, aims to strengthen social cohesion and bridge the gap between generations through similar initiatives. This event not only made the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons unique but also demonstrated how different age groups can enrich each other’s lives.
