Community cooking in the heart of Italy: an unforgettable gastronomic journey
For the last meeting of our BRIDGE - Bringing Digitalization to the Older Generation project, we visited Portogruaro, Italy, in November 2024. Thanks to our partner there, ASS 2050, we were able to participate in an authentic cooking event where we got a closer look at the gastronomic heritage of the area.
Older and younger people gathered in a community centre in a small Italian town to celebrate traditions, local flavours and the joy of being together. Community cooking is not just a gastronomic experience, it is a unique opportunity for generations to come together and share their heritage of culture, history and cooking.
The magic of the place
The venue was the local community centre, which is also used for other events and gatherings. Tables were set up in the hall, beautifully laid out and waiting for the guests. People excitedly gathered and prepared the cooking.
A meeting of the generations
The event was hosted by older members of the local community who presented old family recipes. One of them made polenta in a traditional copper pan, while telling stories about her youth. "I learned this recipe from my mother and we used to make it every holiday. The flavour is not only in the food, but in the love of the family," she said with a smile.
The younger generations were also actively involved in the preparations, even making the traditional tiramisu.
One of the highlights of the evening was the comedy sketch performed by the young people, which brought a big smile to the faces of all the participants.
Fascinated by the local specialities
The tables were filled with the rich flavours of the region. We tasted local polenta with cooked salami, fish pie bites, pumpkin risotto and finally the king of sweet delights that everyone was eager to taste, tiramisu.
The tasting was not only about gastronomic delights, but also about the history of flavours. The family traditions behind the food, the special quality of the local ingredients and the cohesiveness of the community were all present in every bite.
This community cooking in Italy was more than just a meal. The traditions, the flavours and the love of the people provided an experience that fed not only the stomach but also the soul. Locals and visitors alike came away with new friendships and memories - and of course a little extra weight thanks to the irresistible Italian delicacies.
If you ever get the chance to attend such an event, don't hesitate: the perfect harmony of Italian cuisine and community experience is guaranteed to be an experience of a lifetime.
