Art History in Context
The aim of the course is a concise history of art from the Paleolithic civilization up to the 21th century modern culture. This will give the participants the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the basic periods of the worldwide art history and understand the evolution in art via the social, cultural, ideological and aesthetic context of each era. The course will introduce the participants to the historical, socio-cultural themes within an artistic framework and will relate these to the contemporary aes-thetics. Moreover, the course will try to enable participants to recognize and engage with artistic response to the political, economic, sociological and technological influences which have taken place within, and continue to influence, society.
The course is focused on the exploration of:
- the historic movements in art and its relationship to the socio-cultural context of the times.
- the relationship between key his-toric developments in art and con-temporary issues and debates.
- the political, economic, social and technological influences on art within historic and contemporary global contexts.
