10 Things You Can Do About Racism in Ireland
The Irish Network Against Racism has compiled a list of 10 practical ways for everyone of us to combat racism in Ireland.
- Recognise your privilege and its meaning
Make an exercise: start by recognising your own position and privilege in the society. It might be hard as we are born with access to resources, therefore blinded to unfair mechanisms.
- Explore and address your prejudices
Understand your unconscious bias. Here are two videos that will help you in the process:
- Educate yourself
Make research on the origin of racism, read stories, watch documentaries, participate in training, educate yourself on the topic. Education will give you lenses to decipher the reality around you and act accordingly.
- Educate others
Discuss with your relatives, colleagues and friends about racism: you have the power to influence. And if you are a parent here is a list of books for your child.
- Be an active anti-racist ally
Support your local group. Participate in events, engage in activities, be part of the counternarrative against extremist and racists groups.
- Respond to racism in your community
Re-act to every single hint of racism: apathy is often interpreted as acceptance.
- Support those affected by racism
Help victims of racism, let them know you care and they are not alone.
- Report Racism
Always report an episode of racism in a formal way or anonymously at iReport.ie. Here is a checklist of what to bear in mind when making a complain.
- Be an anti-racism advocate in your organization, work, school
Join an anti-racism group, verify whether policies in your workplace, school or organization promote inclusion.
- Pressure leaders
Make sure that your voice is heard and politicians commit to the cause.
