New project DEPAL will support educators to better motivate their adult learners, and improve their use of digital technologies. The project is being led by Liverpool World Centre with support from partners in the UK, Ireland, Greece, Spain and Italy.
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
The ideas took root following successful projects that considered using Philosophy for Children style techniques to explore controversial issues. With funding from the EU (the P4CE project) and the Home Office (Counter Narratives) Liverpool World Centre has developed an expertise in philosophical facilitation techniques, and in their application with communities, adult trainees, and in exploring a range of topics.
P4CE worked with teachers to use Philosophy for Children to explore issues around extremism in the classroom, from primary through to secondary education. Counter Narratives took the ideas into communities, and worked with wide ranging community leaders to enhance their skills in creating safe spaces for dialogue on difficult issues.
WHERE WE’RE GOING
This new project broadens the types of creative facilitation techniques being used with the expert support of Partners Training for Transformation in Dublin.
Whilst DEPAL will ultimately lead to adult learners developing digital skills, the methods used can also open up education as a tool for bringing groups together, exploring language or any other subjects, developing creativity for therapeutic purposes and boosting confidence.
The results of the project will be shared with formal adult education institutions and over 2000 educators. Not only this, but the guide and toolkit created will be freely available on our E-learning platform, for educators across Europe to benefit.
The early stages of the project will see the partnership create a guide to lead us through the first stages of training - ‘Understanding Participatory and Digital Learning: A Guide for Adult Educators’. The guide will introduce the context, theory and rationale behind using participatory and digital learning with adults. It will be available for adult educators who have attended either the Training Activities or in-country training events, in addition to being available for download.
Once we have tested our methods through transnational and local training, the partners will work together to produce a toolkit called How to deliver engaging digital education for Adult Learners. This practical resource will introduce the method, the preparation, the training, together with the projects objectives and needs, and have activities and resources for the classroom. It differs from the Guide by taking a systematic approach to digital learning, with less theory and more resources. The Toolkit will be made up of background information, methods, activities and case studies.
WHO WE’LL WORK WITH
Partners Training for Transformation has been exploring the benefits of using experiential methods in community and development education for nearly forty years. Their practice is largely influenced by the philosophy of Paulo Freire, and informed by a rich tradition of adult education in the context of community work. “A typical Partners piece of work is characterised by gentle participative and experiential learning, a mix of learning methodologies, and a relevance to the interests and energies of participants.” www.trainingfortransformation.ie
Our direct beneficiaries will be adult educators who will benefit from exciting training in Dublin and Rioja, opening up a new world of creative facilitation skills and incorporating digital storytelling methodologies into their work.
Our trainees will have increased ability to create safe spaces for learning, increased awareness of the need for critical thinking, and increased capacity to train others.
