Following the last reform of ongoing vocational training, AFEST (Action for Workplace Learning) has become a teaching method in its own right. A formal training device, AFEST derives from precisely structured engineering.

EPALE France has associated itself with the journal Education Permanente, issue No. 216 of which focuses on learning and training in the workplace, to propose a day of discussions and considerations of AFEST.

How can we use EPALE to continue monitoring and evaluating its activities vis-à-vis AFEST?

How does AFEST (Action for Workplace Learning) question and develop the concepts and methods of training? by Carine MARGERIE-LEMAY 

 

The presentation of the AFEST Working Party in the context of AEFA, by Nathalie Salmon and Frank Savann, HR and Training Consultant, clarified the issues of the AFEST Working Party on the European agenda for adult training.

In the context of the activities of the European agenda for the training and education of adults, coordinated by Erasmus+/Education and Training, in June 2018 the Steering Committee agreed to the creation of a working party on the theme of training activities in the workplace (AFEST). The working party was tasked with the drafting of the deliverable proposition of an operational definition of AFEST. This was to be fed and illustrated by French and European examples of practices and policies relating to the implementation of this teaching method. It was to be an action of advocating, awareness-raising and extending into the awareness of VSB-SME entrepreneurs, AFEST referents and other stakeholders. These jobs do not constitute an evaluation of national policies, but intend to support their implementation, and the deployment of the law enacted in September 2018.

Discussions around the experiments

  • Frédérique Gerard started the AFEST testimonial ball rolling by presenting an example of the support that she had been able to observe at ENEDIS. Participants on that day were able to follow the progress from the images of those involved in the support. The article AFEST support at ENEDIS is an excellent summary.
  • Recognising skills derived from FEST, Olivia Berthelot, HR Consultant and head of an audit and advice firm - feedback to come

Paul SANTELMANN closed this 9th thematic meeting. AFEST, an approach with variable geometry gives feedback on the educational issues   of this training method.

AFEST on EPALE, AFEST in Europe 

  • For the 9th thematic meeting, EPALE France produced a compendium of articles on the theme of learning in the workplace, all derived from the platform. It's a well-researched document, which you can read and share.
  • Frank SAVANN has written a series of three articles about AFEST. The first focuses on the issues, particularly in companies, and their legal recognition specifically in France. The second deals with the promotion of AFEST, which is a key step for its adoption by and within companies. The third will focus on the financing of this new training method.
  • In Wales, the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF)aims to support training initiatives in unionised workplaces where employers recognise the benefits of working in partnership with trade unions to improve the skills of their staff. It is funding a series of projects led by different unions to promote workplace learning, to respond effectively and to plan the different learning needs in each sector or workplace. To see in this blog:
