The Erasmus+ project S.K.I.L.L.S 4 Work seeks to establish quality standards for adult education for learners with a migration or refugee background to enhance their chances for employment, integration, self-efficacy, and management of their daily lives. Lifelong learning is inevitably essential for the professionalisation and upskilling of adult learners.
S.K.I.L.L.S 4 introduces an innovative approach to enhancing the quality of adult education, particularly for migrant and refugee learners. Recognizing the pivotal role of trainers as agents of change and exemplars of lifelong learning, PR3: Trainers Quality Standards—Certification addresses the critical challenge of certifying adult educators. With a scarcity of formal qualifications in "learning to learn" skills across partner countries, the project capitalizes on the findings of PR1 to establish a comprehensive certification for trainers. The proposed web-based assessment tool is designed to evaluate trainers' competencies in imparting "learning to learn" skills to learners with lower academic achievements and limited proficiency in national languages.
A collaborative effort involving partners from multiple countries, the project aligns the certification criteria with a developed curriculum that includes online training modules. The initiative goes further to instil standards of competence that enable trainers with certification to demonstrate adherence to the defined criteria by asking for the attribution of Open Badges.
The project not only targets trainers in adult migrant and refugee education but also extends its potential reach to adult educators working with learners of low academic backgrounds. The transferability of the certification process and the assessment tool is a testament to the project's robust framework, offering a "ready-to-use" solution for stakeholders in adult education at the national, European, and international scales.
Methodologically, the project unfolds through structured steps, with partners collaboratively developing certification templates, exchanging expertise, and formulating criteria that encapsulate essential "learning to learn" skills such as autonomy, digital literacy, relation to others, and oral and intercultural communication. The project ensures accessibility and inclusion for all parties involved by offering its resources in all partners’ languages in addition to English.
