Promoting healthy habits among adolescents
Despite the many known benefits of a healthy lifestyle for young people (Saunders et al., 2016), most of them do not meet health recommendations for many of these behaviours (Tapia-Serrano et al., 2022). The inclusion of new technologies and teacher training in the design and implementation of health education projects have shown promising results in promoting healthy habits (Champion et al., 2019).
Schools are ideal settings for health education and intervention programs, as they offer access to nearly all children and adolescents. Busch et al. (2013) emphasize the importance of a holistic approach, involving families and communities, to ensure interventions become integral parts of students' lives. This approach extends to shaping the physical school environment, such as establishing healthy canteens and enforcing policies like smoke-free school yards.
For these reasons, the objectives of the FITeens project are:
1) To provide teachers with resources to implement effective health promotion programmes for young people
2) To raise students' awareness of the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.
Within the European project FITeens, as experts in the field of healthy behaviours, the University of Zaragoza (Spain), the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém (Portugal) and the University of Tartu (Estonia) have participated, as well as companies from the technology sector such as Jaitek (Spain), Pro Work (The Netherlands) and Innoventum (Finland).
The actions and results of the project are oriented towards the development of different health-related behaviours (i.e. physical activity, sufficient sleep, low screen time, alcohol and tobacco consumption, and healthy food intake):
- A complete and interactive "toolkit" to guide teachers in the design of resources for the promotion of healthy habits also containing some examples that could be used in their teaching practice.
- A mobile phone App with different challenges associated with healthy behaviours that students can also use outside the school
- An online platform or "MOOC" for teacher training in health education.
In conclusion, FITeens is a project co-funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ Programme that aims to provide Physical Education teachers with resources for the promotion of healthy habits among their students, raising awareness of the importance of adopting an active lifestyle.
