How to create a theatrical museum experience
Dramatic expression is an ideal way to engage and educate visitors. During guided tours, for example, actors are employed, visitors are allowed to use their imagination or become part of a story themselves. This approach appeals to people’s emotions, creates a connection to the present, and makes it easier for visitors to remember what they learn. As a result, a museum visit becomes more memorable. Thanks to our project, ’A Theatrical Museum Experience’, we can now inspire other museums across Europe.
The Belgian 'Theater van A tot Z', the Swedish Norrköpings Stadsmuseum and the Croatian Muzeji & Galerije Konavala collaborated to bring together expertise concerning museum theatre. Their most tangible result is a brochure, along with accompanying YouTube videos, which serves as an audiovisual manual to help museums start experimenting with drama. So-called museum theatre has been used in the English-speaking world for quite some time, and our project aims to inspire museums throughout the EU to adopt this practice.
You can find inspiration and examples in our brochure How to Create a Theatrical Museum Experience, in which we share tips and tricks to start working with drama in a museum context. The brochure also refers to three YouTube videos: Why use drama?, What to do? and How to start?
