Europe Day 2025: Empowering adults, strengthening Europe

On Europe Day, we celebrate a defining moment in European history that continues to shape our collective future. On 9th May 1950, the French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, presented his visionary proposal for a new form of political cooperation in Europe. This proposal made war between European nations not merely undesirable but materially impossible. This declaration laid the groundwork for the European Union by proposing the pooling of coal and steel production under a common authority, establishing a framework for peace based on shared values, common interests, and collective governance.

The fundamental values that have guided the transformation from the European Coal and Steel Community to today's European Union are peace and solidarity between nations and peoples; freedom of movement, thought, and expression; democracy and the rule of law; equality and human dignity; cultural diversity and linguistic plurality; and now, sustainable development and environmental protection. These principles are not abstract concepts but practical guides for policy-making across all domains, including education and lifelong learning.

In the area of adult education, these values are clearly defined through many initiatives and programmes. The European Pillar of Social Rights explicitly recognises that "everyone has the right to quality and inclusive education, training and lifelong learning". This unequivocally shows that adult education is not merely a tool for economic advancement. It is a fundamental right and a pathway to full participation in society.

The EU's vision for adult learning is clear: inclusion and equal opportunities are guaranteed to ensure that education reaches all citizens.

Active citizenship empowers adults to participate meaningfully in democratic processes, critical thinking develops the capacity to evaluate information in an age of misinformation (and disinformation... and propaganda), and support for digital and green transitions equips adults with the necessary skills for sustainable development.

Therefore, Europe Day in 2025 is a time to acknowledge the relevance of these values, especially in the face of challenges like geopolitical tensions, climate change, and digital transformation. In a world facing such challenges, Europe's approach of cooperation, solidarity, and respect for human dignity offers a beacon of hope, and this is as true today as it was in 1950.

Adult education professionals, take note: this day reminds us of our broader purpose!

Adult education in Europe goes beyond just transferring skills and knowledge. It aims to foster more cohesive societies, boost democratic involvement, bridge cultural gaps, and encourage innovation while preserving our European heritage. The European Commission's commitment to adult learning is reflected in substantial investments through programmes, initiatives, platforms and funds.

Adult education professionals across Europe are not just teachers or trainers: they are ambassadors of European values. Their work translates abstract principles into concrete realities for millions of adult learners, providing them with skills and knowledge and creating spaces for dialogue, reflection, and community-building. Adult education will increasingly play a vital role in realising the European vision as we look to the future.

We celebrate both the historical achievement of European integration and its continued relevance on this Europe Day.

The values set out in the Schuman Declaration - peace, solidarity, freedom, and cooperation - are more important than ever for adult learning and education. You, as adult education professionals, are at the forefront of building a Europe of knowledge, inclusion, and opportunity. Your commitment is vital to ensuring the European project remains vibrant, relevant and responsive to the needs of all citizens.
