Can the internet use lead to the internet addiction?
As far back as 1998 (Kraut et al, 1998) indicated that using the internet leads to less communication between family members and a greater prevalence of depression. This has opened up a new field of research related to the use of information technology.
Today the internet is widely used for obtaining information, education, entertainment and it is easy to access through computers, smartphones and other devices. The primary aim of internet use may depend on gender, age, educational level, culture and job of its users. Individual and environmental factors have a significant influence on the internet addiction. Internet addiction has huge impact on relationships in family, friends, social interactions as well as on school and job productivity. People who have internet addiction may have different health problems such as sleep, mental and vision disorders, obesity and musculoskeletal problems.
Internet browsing
People browse the internet every day. They read news, do shopping, watch broadcasts, book travel, pay bills and do many other things. Also, people do internet search in order to find health-related information.
For some people repeated searches for medical information on the internet make anxiety worse. This phenomenon is called "cyberchondria". Those who experience more anxiety due to searching for medical information on the internet have a greater dependence on the internet compared to people for whom searching for medical information on the internet has no effect or reduces their anxiety (Fergus TA, Dolan SL, 2014).
Social networks
The number of social networks is increasing. People tend to show themselves in the best possible manner on them. They put on their profiles the most beautiful photos of parties, different travel destinations, wardrobe, restaurants. Other people who watch those profiles may become sad, disappointed and get depressed. However, social networks may be used to stay in touch with some people and follow their life events.
Using the internet has many beneficial but also potentially harmful effects on human health. So people should be careful with its use. What are your thoughts on the internet use and internet addiction?
