This short guide, created as part of a Grundtvig learning partnership: AEPT 2020 - Adult Education Pathways Towards 2020 - is a presentation of principles underlining good practices of adult lifelong learning with a special focus on senior learners. These principles are strictly related to the concept of motivation – the unique, driving force behind any form of learning.
Therefore, the Guide gives an overview of central issues related to motivation in adult learners – and specifically senior learners (Part I). This is followed by a brief presentation of principles of innovative learning environments and a discussion on how these principles come to life in different forms involving senior learners in training provided by each project partner (Part II).
The subsequent part aims to give the list of features that are central to successful educational programs involving adult, senior learners (Part III). Due to the objectives of Grundtvig learning partnership projects, which promote and give priority to the process of learning among partners, the Guide does not aim to present an in-depth academic research on the complex nature of adult and senior learning processes.
Neither does it try to describe in detail the 4 principles of innovative learning environments because the scope of such a study goes well beyond the parameters of this project. In essence, the Guide signposts the most important features of the map of learning environments that are effective, creative or innovative for senior learners. The experience and contribution from project partners from five countries – Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Spain – are real-life examples highlighting the possibilities of adult education pathways.
