SCIENCE LEARNING IN INFORMAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR ADULTS: A CASE STUDY FOR TURKEY

The purpose of this study was to investigate the activities and programs for science learning in informal environments for adults in Turkey. In order to make this study effective and to keep it manageable, the activities and the trainings in designed settings offering a potential for science learning were evaluated. It was expected that the findings of this research would contribute to the discussion and development of the concepts of science literacy and science learning in informal environments; and would help to develop systematic and institutional recommendations for strengthening and disseminating science learning in informal environments and programs for adults. As a qualitative case study; a semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven selected institutions on the basis of the recognition, scope diversity, size and activities organized for adults. Through the interviews and the observations, it was attempted to determine the level of benefit for adults from the activities of science learning carried out in these environments, and to evaluate the quality of education and of the activities in terms of science learning elements in which the adults participated.
