Dr. Kevin Warner in a journal article discusses the philosophy and practice of adult education as ‘the full development of the human personality’. While research into prison education agrees that adult-learners there value this approach, policies limit adult education in prisons. 

This paper is published in a special issue of 'Advancing Corrections'the journal of the International Corrections and Prisons Association (ICPA), focusing on education in prison. Find the full issue here.

The paper was developed from the 14th ‘Liam Minihan Lecture’ given in Dublin in May 2016, a lecture organised annually by the Irish Prison Education Association (IPEA). 

Dr. Warner was National Co-ordinator of Prison Education in the Department of Justice/Irish Prison Service from 1979 – 2009. Since retiring in 2009, he has continued to research and write, mainly on prison education and penal reform in Ireland. If you would like to read more on this, please visit Dr. Warner’s website
