Many workplace learning practices can be mentioned. Observational learning and other informal learning methods are among the most important of these practices. Informal learning ways that enable continuous learning come into prominence especially in the use of technology, internet and social networks. One of the workplace learning practices is self-directed learning. This short article includes an assessment of the meaning, implementation and advantageous aspects of self-directed learning in the workplace.

Self-directed learning involves making decisions about how the learner starts learning and what training and development experiences will occur. Learners choose and put into practice their own learning goals, methods and ways to show that they have achieved their goals. For self-directed learning to become systematic, learning needs and objectives, how to acquire knowledge and skills, and how to evaluate learning should be decided.

Studies show that learning in the workplace is largely realized by the individual himself through work-related experiences. Self-directed learning programs;

It is effective in development. Learning involves the learning shapes and objectives of workers.

Cost is significantly reduced. Practical and timely materials are used by learners.

Employee effectiveness increases. They learn and apply from their own work experiences.

For self-directed learning in the workplace, an adult educator advisor should be identified and guided. The role of an adult educator is to guide individuals to learning, encourage them to consult and support learners.

In order to create a self-directed learning environment in the workplace, first of all, learners' personal characteristics, learning styles and motivational orientations about learning should be known. In other words, individual differences in learning should be considered. It is important that the adult educator is a guide to the learning experience rather than providing information. Learners should be helped to develop positive attitudes and a sense of independence about learning. On the other hand, opportunities should be created for self-directed learners to reflect what they have learned. Creating an environment in which learning is reflected will make the learning experience meaningful. Presenting what is learned to other employees through different learning styles, such as learning networks and work rings, will ensure that what is learned is reflected on the work and others in the workplace and thus the information is shared.
