Irish President speaks about learning and life chances

This week marks National Adult Literacy Awareness Week in Ireland. NALA, at their launch event on Monday were fortunate to have Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland deliver a keynote address. This opening event entitled ‘Learning and life chances: promoting equality through basic education’ was organised to raise awareness of the social and economic benefits of helping people with low or no qualifications access education.

 

President Higgins spoke about the progress that is being made to assist those with literacy difficulties particularly but noted that there is a great distance left to travel in achieving this equality. Read the Presidents full speech here in which he describes literacy as a gateway to participation in society and a fundamental right. The event also saw adult learners present President Higgins with some of their work.
